There is nothing quite like the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans. But a common question among coffee enthusiasts is: how long do they actually stay fresh, and how should they be stored?
The Lifespan of Coffee Beans
Whole coffee beans are at peak freshness between 7 and 21 days after their roast date. After this period, oxidation causes them to lose their vibrant flavors and aromas. Ground coffee degrades much faster, losing its freshness within just a few days.
How to Store Coffee Beans
- Keep Them Airtight: Oxygen is the enemy of coffee. Store your beans in an airtight container, preferably one with a one-way valve that lets CO2 escape.
- Avoid Heat and Light: Keep your container in a cool, dark place like a pantry. Glass jars on a sunny counter will quickly ruin your beans.
- Don’t Freeze Them (Usually): Unless you are buying in massive bulk and vacuum sealing them, freezing beans can introduce moisture and freezer burn.
